The Marquis de Lafayette was a 19-year old French aristocrat and officer who was inspired to join the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Injured at the Battle of Brandywine, young Lafayette returned to the war and helped win the Battle
of Yorktown. Following the war, Lafayette authored a French Declaration of Rights and was assigned to command a French Army. He was later arrested and spent over five years in an Austrian prison. Upon his release, Lafayette was invited to tour America during 1824 and 1825, in what became his "Farewell Tour of America." The world continues to revere Marquis de Lafayette as a Revolutionary War hero and vocal advocate of human rights worthy of our honor, respect, and admiration even today!`
American hero Marquis de Lafayette will once again visit Lancaster and Western Chester Counties as part of the non-profit organization American Friends of Lafayette's Bicentennial Project to commemorate Lafayette’s triumphant Farewell Tour of America in 1824 and 1825! Hundreds of events are being planned nationwide to trace Lafayette’s footsteps on the exact dates and in the exact order in the 24 states Lafayette visited on his Tour.
